His peak period as the main lead hero in Hindi films was 1973-1982. He had successful films even in 1987-1995 as the main lead both in solo hero films and more than 2 hero films. As a supporting actor in 1968-1972 he was part of hits like Purab Aur Pachhim,Mastana and Elaan and the Rajesh Khanna films Sachcha Jhuta, Aan Milo Sajna.

He appeared in 137 films, of which 55 are solo hero films and 45 are 2 hero films with Vinod as the lead hero. In all, he acted as the main lead hero in 100 films and 37 films had him in the supporting role.

His peak period as the main lead hero in Hindi films was between 1973-1982. He had successful films even in 1987-1995 as the main lead, both in solo hero films and more than 2 hero films. Vinod Khanna’s solo hero blockbusters in 1975-81 were- Qaid in 1975 and Zalim in 1980 both opposite Leena Chandervarkar and Inkaar in 1977 opposite Vidya Sinha followed by Aap Ki Khatir, Khoon Ki Pukar, Yuvraaj, Gharam Koon, Lahu Ke Do Rang, Taaqat and Jail Yatra.

In films with Rajesh Khanna as the lead hero, Vinod Khanna always had either the antagonist role or supporting role and not even the parallel lead. These film were Sachaa Jhutha, Aan Milo Sajna, Prem Kahani, Kudrat and Rajput. All the five films were super-hits. Vinod accepted his roles in Kudrat and Rajput even after he had become a successful solo lead hero himself just due to rappo he shared with Rajesh Khanna.

Vinod Khanna was second highest paid Hindi actor from 1987-1994 and along-with with Shashi Kapoor was 3rd highest paid Hindi actor from 1976-82.

It was the melodious R.D. composed Rafi-Asha “Sasoan Mein Kabhi” from the box office flop film Parchaiyaan in 1972, where his romantic skills got noticed among cine-goers.

After he made a comeback in 1987, his solo hero films released in 1987-88 like Satyamev Jayate , Insaaf , Mahaadev and Aakhri Adaalat were big hits. He was disappointed when his film Dayawan and Rihaee were box office flops but these two films were critically acclaimed.

Much similar to Amitabh Bachchan’s career, Vinod Khanna was part of more multi star films with him too playing the main lead in period 1973-1982. Both of them have got lesser solo hero films to their credit than Rajesh Khanna,Jeetendra and Dev Anand.

He played supporting role in Sunil Dutt starers Reshma Aur Shera and Nehle Pe Dehla and played parallel lead to Sunil Dutt in Daku Aur Jawan.

In the 1990’s, his solo hits include Muqaddar Ka Badshaah, C.I.D., Jurm, Humshakal (1992). The 2 hero films of Vinod Khanna to be successful from 1989-1995 include Farishtay, Khoon Ka Karz, Police Aur Mujrim, Kshatriya, Ekka Raja Rani and Eena Meena Deeka.

His critically acclaimed films as a lead hero, which were box-office hits, were Mere Apne, Gaddar, Achanak, Aarop (1973), Kuchhe Dhaage (1973), Farebi (1974),Imtihan, Qaid, Inkaar, Insaaf , Jurm, Kranti (2002) whereas the critically acclaimed but box office flops were Shaque, Meera, Rihaee , 99(2009), Pehchaan: The Face of Truth (2005), Red Alert: The War Within(2009).

Vinod Khanna did 55 solo hero films of which 27 were hits and did 46 multi-star cast films of which 29 were box-office success.

He got his first break as lead hero in the film Mere Apne, which became a hit. The film’s director Gulzar was not famous before this film released.

Vinod Khanna was no.2 in terms of being the highest paid Hindi actor, behind Rajesh Khanna in the period 1976-1980. Due to his withdrawal from acting, Amitabh managed to share the no.1 position with Rajesh from 1980-87.
